Building and applying registry tweaks againts Windows XP

Building a registry tweak
Fetch, install and execute the ProcessMonitor tool. Then add those filters to the existing ones,
add operation is regcreatekey
add operation is regdeletekey
add operation is regflushkey
add operation is regrenamekey
add operation is regsetvalue
Path contains explorer
then click in the output area and clear the logs,
Ctrl-X

Now see what's going on when you customize something e.g. the taskbar. Once the registry path is identified, go to that place with regedit and either export the sub-folder (right click > export) or copy/paste the content in a blank .reg file with notepad for example to disable taskbar autotray (hide inactive trays),
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer]
"EnableAutoTray"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"TaskbarSizeMove"=dword:00000000
"TaskbarGlomming"=dword:00000000

Applying registry tweaks
You are ready to go: you got either a provided .reg file or the one you just created. Double click on it to apply and, if it's relevant to the taskbar and explorer process, restart it at a command line prompt,
tskill explorer
(it restarts automaticly)
